The Passive-Aggressive “Awareness” Tag

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month.   Also, David Horowitz has launched Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week.

This “awareness” tag is passive-aggressive BS.  There couldn’t possibly be anyone alive who is not “aware” of breast cancer.  One of our local TV shows covers the Race for the Cure as if it were a political party’s national convention taking place in St. Louis.  They’ve turned the arch pink.  I think we’re aware.

And there also isn’t anybody who is not “aware” that there is such a thing as an Islamic terrorism.  There used to be two big buildings in lower Manhattan that aren’t there anymore.

No, the people behind these things aren’t after “awareness,” they’re after specific action, but don’t want to say so.  The implication is that our collective failure to take their desired action is that we are unaware of the problem.  No, we’re quite aware; we just don’t agree with your preferred solution.

If you want us to take an action, advocate the action, don’t hide behind this “awareness” dodge.
