Fear mongering lies from the right-wing…

If Glenn Beck were to have said something like below last week, he’d be accused of being stoking fear and resentment with lies.

In Obama’s America, if your 13 year old daughter is drugged and raped by a big-shot Hollywood director, you will be told to chill out about it. Efforts to bring the rapist to justice will be criticized as Puritanical legalistic bullying. People will sign petitions and write articles defending the rapist. If your daughter was not a virgin before the rape, that will be cited as reason not to bring your daughter’s rapist.

Of course, this is exactly what’s been happening with Roman Polanski.

There has been much discussion of right-wing anger over the past few months. I think it stems from people that they are losing power, and don’t like what’s coming. Those who engage in it and provoke it bear the most responsibility, but I think we all need to ask ourselves how we contribute to these notion and confirm the scary stereotypes.

And going out of one’s way to say that drugging and raping a 13 year old girl is a pardonable offense confirms the worst stereotypes. I don’t want people who think this in charge.

UPDATE: I should note that almost all of the latest commentary I have seen from the left has been saner, and acknowledged that if you drug and rape a 13 year old, you ought to go to jail.

  1. Glad to read that most people, be they to the right or left, still respect that we should not allow the abuse of 13 year old girls.
