Sawyer: The Face of Progress?
Posted in media | 1 Comment »
At the XX blog, Jessica Grose laments the lack of excitement around Diane Sawyer being named the new anchor of ABC World News Tonight. (Warning: post contains the most unflattering picture of Diane Sawyer I have ever seen)
But from an equality standpoint, wouldn’t fanfare be a bad thing? Grose doesn’t like that ABC News exec David Westin remarked that Sawyer was “the obvious choice.” Isn’t that a good thing? That Sawyer is not some sort of novelty stunt, but just manifestly the most qualified person for the position?
Grose concludes, “I only wish her bosses were similarly excited about her new position, and that they didn’t make it sound like she is getting the job because it was the path of least resistance.” But isn’t this where we want to end up? Where giving the top job to the woman most clearly qualified for the position is the path of least resistance?
Maybe I’m missing something.

The picture of here in Jack Shafer’s Slate article, where he advises her not to take the job, is much worse, IMHO.
Other than that, I agree. Grose’s argument does seem odd, considering.
